Thanks Marek, I am a little biased in my opinion about subs though (or did you notice that )! I really hope that in the next year these agencies will reevaluate these programs and will reward the artists a little better. I don't believe that subs programs can be better for their bottom line than individual sales.

I completely agree with that percentage. Most of the work is spent choosing, processing and retouching the photos.

That's why I think it's always better to take the photo as best as you can in-camera to reduce the post-processing times. In this way, more time can be spent taking photos than editing.

Great post - I'm always getting caught out with ISO and metering - leaving my camera in spot photometry when I want area!
Could I suggest another check for those of us shooting jpegs - "Quality".
I was taking some pics for ebay at low resolution, then went out and took some landscapes, but got home to find that I'd forgot to change my camera jpegs back to the highest setting! Bah!

Thanks, Rob.

You've mentioned 'subs' a lot -- what do you mean by that?

I've heard that summer is generally a slow time for microstock anyway -- is the decline you've seen been beyond the typical summer decline?

Honestly, I've been so focused on getting images submitted and accepted that I've kind of ignored the whole payment issue. 20% commission is really, really bad though, even if the volume makes up for it. The problem is, there really is no reason not to use the sites that give crappy commissions, since some money is better than no money.

Again, the whole system is skewed against the small-volume photographer. But we knew that.
